News: Garagehammer - Episode 19

Garagehammer has just released episode 19 of their outstanding podcast show. If you would like to listen to it or download it for when you roam, just click here.

Episode 19 – Orcs Went Waaaff While Chris and Chris Sundered Each Other

Sponsored by Unique Gifts & Games, Unseen Lerker, The Game Preserve, and Ursa’s Den

The Garage ManaGeR segment is sponsored by Chaos Orc’s Superstore

Shout out Sponsors: Robert Ruffner and the Circle City Circuit.

Please welcome back to the podcast Chris Yu. After a bit of trouble with the Master Engineer segment, the show gets going full steam. We discuss the Tomb Kings announcement. Painting, and get some elven battle reports and a discussion of David’s his first ever game of 40K, and after a few tournament updates, we delve into our first impressions of all that green goodness. Warning, we discuss a lot, but not everything. We only got the book in at our local gaming establishment that morning. Lots of furious writing ensued and after work everyone took a little while to look over the info. Just remember, these are our first impressions and I for one am looking forward to revisiting this book in a few months and seeing if anything we said turned out to be right.

Episode 19 Index (times approximate)

0:00-2:20 – Master Engineer (with interruptions) and Announcer

2:20-5:15 – Greetings, Sponsors and Shout Out Sponsors

5:15-28:55 – News and Rumors

28:55-29:55 First Commercial Break

29:55-1:07:55 – Garage ManaGeR Section (brought to you by Chaos Orc Superstore)

Chris Yu paints some HE Spearmen and is building a “hard to explain” display board

1:09:05-1:51:25 – Battle Reports

Invasion Kenosha III General Raffle Prize Announcement

Invasion Kenosha is very excited to announce the first prize in the Invasion Kenosha general raffle. One lucky winner will receive a copy of the ShadowSea rulebook.

ShadowSea is a game of fast-paced miniatures combat using 28mm scale figures, powered by the renowned Song of Blades ruleset from Ganesha Games. A full website for ShadowSea and the publisher, AntiMatter Games, is in production for later in November, along with a printed version of the game. Official miniatures are in production by Cavalcade Wargames under their Dragonblood line.

The ShadowSea rules are packed with 104 pages of action and adventure in a lost underground realm. Six unique forces search for ancient artifacts and golden treasures through crumbling ruins, trap-filled catacombs and underwater citadels.

ShadowSea has many features that make it a flexible gaming system that is perfect for beginners but deep enough for experienced gamers.

1. SIMPLE RULES that can be learned in one game, using 6-sided dice for rolls for combat, physical activities, spellcasting, using ancient technology or any other action during the game.

2. FAST GAMEPLAY, lasting 30-45 minutes, with game models on each side alternating their turns of activation so that all players can stay in the flow of the game.

3. SMALL WARBANDS of 6-12 models, so that anyone can have a warband destined for glory without spending a fortune.

4. EASY MOVEMENT rules based on three measurement sticks.

5. TABLETOP PLAY allows players to build a map on any 1 meter-square surface without the need for a grid. Just add scenery and start the game.

6. NO BOOKKEEPING! The models in a warband are represented by a basic block of two statistics and a few special abilities.

7. CAMPAIGN PROGRESSION allows a warband to increase in power as it wins battles along an epic campaign across environments spanning fungal forests, ruined cities, underground temples, and shadowy underwater citadels.

8. MAGIC AND TECHNOLOGY interweave in the Underlands. Warbands may battle using arcane magical spells or ancient technological weapons in the mysterious underground realm.

9. ACTION BASED GAMEPLAY means that models have many choices of actions besides simply whacking each other across the skull. Leap chasms, climb pillars, break through walls, set explosives or try something unexpected.

10. SIX COMPLETE FORCES battle in their quest for ancient artifacts. Over 300 heroes, fiends, wild creatures, ethereal demons, ancient mechanical constructs and stygian monsters.

Preparing to Invade: Part One

Invasion Kenosha II image provided by Full of Monkey Designs

As part of the preparations for the next Invasion, construction of the theme for each set of tables has begun. Invasion Kenosha III is using a pod approach to pairing and scenarios. In this approach, players are assigned to pods of 8 players each. Each round of the tournament, a pod will be assigned to a certain set of tables. The scenarios are written to reflect the table set, thus allowing for more creative scenarios that may rely on specific terrain pieces without needing to construct 16 pieces or forcing players to bring additional materials.

Another aspect of Invasion Kenosha is the running story that started last year. The overall arc is called Old Magic and involves the return of some ancient adversaries that predate the old ones. During last year’s chapter, the enigmatic Chronomancer captured a powerful artifact called the Orb of Kronos. At the end of the tournament, it was revealed that the Chronomancer now had the means to free his “brothers” from whatever prison was holding them.

Bringing this back to the topic of terrain, Invasion Kenosha III picks up the story with the goal of having the next chapter reflected in the scenarios and terrain. Like last year, each scenario will have an opening narrative, but this time, players will also get a visual of what is happening via the terrain. I have some wild ideas at the moment, so I need to narrow them down and make sure that what I want to accomplish with the terrain is possible. I am fortune that Andrew and the NIMGC have offered to assist and are building terrain for a few tables.

Again, while the specific themes are still being hammered out, I can share a couple of generalities about the terrain. The first one is that every table will have some large, line-of-sight blocking pieces. I am of the opinion that LOS rules now require these kinds of terrain in order to play a more balanced game. Another generality about the terrain is that games will be played on 6’ x 4’ battlefields, so my expectation is that each board will have a lot of terrain.

News: Center Stage Miniatures

The latest posting from Center Stage Miniatures Blog.

Of Perytons and Packages....

It's been a long time since I've updated this blog, but from now on I'll be posting weekly updates on what's new and exciting here at Center Stage Miniatures in the new year!

Jason Wiebe's Peryton sculpt will soon be available for pre-order at www.centerstageminis.com.

Since the Peryton appears in groups (or would that be flocks?) I am debating selling these in groups of two or three as well, and am curious to see what gamers think of that suggestion. I also plan to contact Jason about a variant sculpt, possibly using the same head and wings (how about a Peryton in flight?)

If you like the Peryton, there's also another miniature currently on Mr. Wiebe's table that is getting ready for a Center Stage debut...but I'll leave that one as a surprise for future blog posts. Look for that one this summer.

I will say remor haz it that it's a big one, and one that Old School rpg enthusiasts would like to see. Oh, wait...was that a spelling error?

The Peryton's suggested MSRP is $10.50, but once the fine folks at Iron Wind Metals start casting, I'll be offering a limited-time pre-order for 10% off the regular retail price. Just for the record, the exquisite paint job on our Peryton was done by Joe Wiedeman, of Studio Minidragon.

Official 2011 Sponsor: Cavalcade Wargames

Another new sponsor for 2011 is Cavalcade Wargames. Cavalcade is a wargaming company that produces high-quality 28mm miniatures for wargamers, painters, modelers and collectors. Among the ranges they produce or have in development are Ming Chinese, Khmer, Wako Pirates, Somali Pirates, Roger’s Rangers and Fantasy Armies of the Far East.

I asked Cavalcade Wargames to sponsor Invasion this year after discovering their range of Dragonblood - Songs of Shadowsea miniatures. ShadowSea is a tactical miniatures game set in a sunless world, lost to history until seekers of fortune ventured into the nighted depths to confront the rulers of the ancient seas and guardians of forgotten relics. Game sessions can be simple and quick, taking less than an hour, or can be linked to grand campaigns, where warbands quest for lost artifacts across a sunless ocean with myriad islands, forests of towering fungal trees, and ruined cities infested with hungry creatures.
Check back in the months ahead as we announce some of the cool Cavalcade items we will have at Invasion Kenosha III.
